What type of soldering iron should I use?
Well, I'm modding my xbox controller, and my last soldering iron broke (Not melting solder no more). Is there any ideal soldering iron I should use? Or no? And is there a product to keep my soldering iron last longer,
Thanks in advance,
Nathan ☺
A fairly low wattage [so you don't fry any delicate electronics] pencil type [NOT a pistol grip 'soldering gun'] with replaceable elements is the way to go. The handle has a mini-candelabra size light bulb socket in the end, into which the element screws.
Elements with replaceable tips are nice, too, since the tips can get nasty, need to be filed, then get nasty again, and are eventually all gone. Get a denim rag for wiping the tip; I find that works the best.
How to keep it going longer depends on how the old one failed. I like the replaceable element type because heating elements only last so long. Also you can get different wattages for different tasks.
