Famous Name Sculpture?
We have to create a "famous name" sculpture in ceramics class. Has to be at least twelve inches in width or length, etc. and needs to be of someone or something famous.
I heard a former student made a gatorade bottle, and someone in my class is making a bust of Bob Marley. I want to do something bust-like, because.. it sounds cool, however I don't think I'd know how. I'm in Ceramics II, so I'm not a professional by any means.. xD
I don't want to do something as simple as a Nike symbol, but not something as complex as a sculpture of David. I had started to make Flapjack from the marvelous misadventures of flapjack, but that also proved to be a bit difficult. Should I just stick with it? Or..
Are there any other cool, but easy ideas?
I would probably choose someone other than flapjack, his neck is too small to make a good bust .
Anybody with a more life like neck and shoulders should work fine, I think tony the tiger would be awesome. Spongebob would be super easy.
Busts are pretty easy, but you have to approach them right. They are a great learning experience, so I would stick with it. Your teacher will probably have to advise you, especially with the drying process, so don't be afraid to ask for help .
Forget about making your piece hollow at first. Instead, sculpt it solid and place it on a piece of canvas on top of a board. Get it the exact shape you want, but don't do any details yet. Wrap the piece losely with plastic. Let the piece start to dry, making sure it dries slowly so it doesn't crack. This takes a few days. Once it's dry enough that it keeps it shape, but still wet enough to scoop the innards out of, place it on foam to support it and hollow it out. You may have to cut some pieces off it of in order to hollow everything to a fireable width- usually the top of the head and shoulders. Check the width by using your needle tool. Once it's hollow, slip, score, and reattach the pieces you cut off. Finally, do the detail work. Now you're done and ready to fire!
