Art And Sculpture Com
I'm a young artist in London looking to show and sell my art. Where are the best places?
Hello, I'm a 19 year old living in South London. I'm still at college on a Art course but over this summer I would like to start selling some of the artwork I do at home. I mainly do large canvas paintings of still life and abstract forms, although I also like to make mosaics and clay sculptures.
I tried selling some art on etsy.com but that failed miserably, and I have an account on DeviantArt but I don't know if it's a waste of time putting my art on there.
Basically I don't really know where to start in actually showing and selling my art, so if there is any galleries or places in London for young, new artists where I could get my art shown and maybe make some money, PLEASE tell me, cause I'm clueless and kinda desperate. ;(
You know its always difficult when you start of to get the ball rolling. Since your only 19 i would almost recommend you to simply focus on you art for a couple of years and then later focus on the marketing aspect. The better you get the easier its going to be for you to sell. But since it seems that you want to sell some work the easiest thing is for you to find an audience. For example if your doing art for the moment that leans more towards decorative art, like still life, then find people that and business that like this kind of stuff. One is not going to sell painting that has to deal about god to and atheist so likewise someone that that doesnt prefer decorative art isnt going to be interested in your work even if its good. So go to restaurants, pubs, cafe, libraries and so forth b/c they like and need decorative art. Chat them up tell them that if their interested in paintings to brighten up their place to get a hold of you. If you have a website and cards it would be easier to send them to your site. If you dont have one work with what you have so send them to your deviant page. But realize that you have to upgrade later b/c this isnt the most professional. Also remove all the bullshit comments that you or your friends might have left that can ruin you chance of getting a job. e.g. the partying and drinking and so forth also take good photos of your work. In some cases you can allow a cafe to hang your work for free with the hopes of someone seeing it, liking it and then commissioning you. Go to as many places as you can. I had the opportunity to go to London last year and one of the things that i was blown away by was the immense size of the whole city. So go to as many places as you can b/c thier is many. Realize that if you spend 12 hours a day doing art you might have to spend just as much time early on finding jobs early on. Hope this helps
